No! I Don't Want to Join a Book Club - Virginia Ironside
Her friends may face turning 60 with trepidation, but retired art teacher Marie Sharp can’t wait for the benefits—including the freedom to say no to book clubs and learning Italian.

The novel resembles a British comedy of manners with clever witticisms and smart cultural references; the heartwarming interactions with her first grandchild and close relationship with a dying friend add emotional depth. Sharp’s refreshing outlook is hard to resist, no matter your age.

Focus on the Election @ Long Hill Library

SUPPORT YOUR CANDIDATE, SUPPORT THE LIBRARY, AND LEARN A LITTLE SOMETHING!

Join WHRHS history teacher Shelly Lettington for a timely discussion of the
history of the power struggle between the President and the Supreme Court in a
talk called POTUS (President of the United States) vs. SCOTUS (Supreme Court of the United States), at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27.

And while you're at the library don't forget to VOTE in our Presidential Penny Poll!

Three jars representing Mitt Romney, Barack Obama, and the other four major candidates will be available at the front of the library. Patrons can contribute a few coins or more to “vote” for the candidate of their choice. Whichever candidate has the most money when the poll closes at 7:00 PM on election night will be the “winner.” All proceeds will go to support the Library.

“There are a lot of serious issues to consider in this year’s election,” said Library Director Alexandria Arnold. “This is a chance to lighten things up a little, and for residents to support the library by supporting their candidate.”

“There are all sorts of wacky ways to predict the winner of the election,” she added with a smile. “Some people track sales of Halloween face masks. Why shouldn’t the Long Hill Library Penny Poll become another important national predictor?”

Tune in for Penny Poll election results on the Library’s web page longhilllibrary.org.

The POTUS v SCOTUS talk is part of the “Out of the Classroom: WHREA Community Lectures Series,” sponsored by the Watchung Hills Education Association, the high school teacher’s union.

Book Club - Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything

Please join us at the Long Hill Library on Monday, Sept 10 @ 7:00 pm! We'll be discussing Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer.
"When I wake up," Joshua Foer writes in Moonwalking With Einstein, "the first thing I do is check my day planner, which remembers my schedule so that I don't have to. When I climb into my car, I enter my destination into a GPS device, whose spatial memory supplants my own."
Journalist Foer examines the role of memory in public and private life, while also telling the story of his efforts to compete in the U.S. Memory Championship, a tournament in which contestants memorize random words and numbers, or the order of a deck of cards. Foer set out to write about mental athletes — and ended up becoming one himself. At his prime, Foer could memorize the order of a shuffled deck of playing cards in 1 minute and 40 seconds
In the end Foer realizes that memory is a key component of who we are, but decides "it is forgetting, not remembering, that is the essence of what makes us human."

How Teens Learn - What Parents Need to Know!

How the Teenage Brain Learns @ Long Hill Library on Sunday, Sept 9 from 2pm - 3pm
Learn how you & your teen can work together to identify their "learning profile" and develop a strategy for studying.
Just like your body has many systems that work together to keep you alive, the brain has eight systems that need to work together in order for learning to occur. However, not all systems grow and develop at the same rate.
When a child struggles to learn, it may indicate that all systems are not growing at the same rate (very common in teenagers). Learn about these systems and examples of how you (and your teenager) can work together to identify their "learning profile" and develop a strategy for studying.

Carol Landa has taught freshman Biology at WHRHS for 10 years as well as CP Physics and MASS (Math Applications and Science Skills).
On weekends she teaches a musical program to preschoolers. Prior to teaching high school, Ms. Landa developed and taught curriculum dealing with Six Sigma problem-solving for numerous corporations. She holds degrees in Biology (BS) and Food Science (MS) and is currently pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Neurodevelopment.

Part entertainment and part brutal intimidation, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. All citizens are required to watch the 24 participants eliminate their competitors.

The Imperfectionists - Tom Rachman
Spirited, moving, and highly original. Set against the gorgeous backdrop of Rome, this vibrant debut novel follows the topsy-turvy private lives of the reporters, editors, and executives of an international English language newspaper as they struggle to keep it - and themselves - afloat.

Fifty years have ensued since the paper was founded by an enigmatic millionaire, and now, amid the stained carpeting and dingy office furniture, the staff's personal dramas seem far more important than the daily headlines.

As the era of print news gives way to the Internet age this imperfect crew stumbles toward an uncertain future.

Beam Me Up Scotty: Mobile Technology & Travel

This Saturday, May 19, at 2 p.m. at the Long Hill Library:
Remember when Star Trek transporters seemed like an impossible dream for the far off future? Although we may not be beaming up like Captain Kirk or Mr. Spock yet, Smart phones, GPS and Google Maps have had a huge impact on present-day travel.
How does technology change the way we explore and travel? A fascinating field known as human geography sets out to explore this and other questions basic to how we live in today’s world.
Dr. Sean DiGiovanna will talk about how human geography research can contribute to our understanding of the way teenagers interact with technology and develop their way-finding skills.
A study he conducted at Watchung Hills High School with students sheds some light on the use of mobile technology among teenagers and also raises some interesting questions about whether these sophisticated mobile technologies actually stimulate or inhibit teenagers from exploring the world around them.
Sean DiGiovanna has a B.A. in geography from The Johns Hopkins University (1991) and received a National Science Foundation fellowship to support his Ph.D in geography from the University of Toronto (1997). Dr. DiGiovanna currently teaches U.S. history, human geography and economics at
Watchung Hills, where he also serves as president of the Watchung Hills Regional Education Association.
