Please join us at the Long Hill Library on Monday, Sept 10 @ 7:00 pm! We'll be discussing Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer.
"When I wake up," Joshua Foer writes in Moonwalking With Einstein, "the first thing I do is check my day planner, which
remembers my schedule so that I don't have to. When I climb into my car,
I enter my destination into a GPS device, whose spatial memory
supplants my own."
Journalist Foer examines the role of memory in public and private life, while also telling the story of his
efforts to compete in the U.S. Memory Championship, a tournament in
which contestants memorize random words and numbers, or the order of a
deck of cards. Foer set out to write about mental athletes — and ended up becoming one himself. At his prime, Foer could memorize the order of a shuffled deck of playing cards in 1 minute and 40 seconds
In the end Foer realizes that memory is a key
component of who we are, but decides "it is forgetting, not remembering,
that is the essence of what makes us human."
