Protect Your Identity Events @ Long Hill Library

Protect Your Identity -  Shredding Events

Admit it. You have them.

They lurk — in the attic, under the bed, in the back of the closet, under the stairs, in the basement and garage — yes, old pay stubs, checks, bank statements, doctors’ bills, insurance reports and financial statements of all sorts. They contain sensitive information — Social Security and account numbers, date of birth and address — and there may be years’ worth from before the dawn of online banking and bill paying. It could take seemingly forever to run them one by one through a home shredder.

Help is on the way.

The Long Hill Township Library has two events for you.

The first is on Tuesday, Oct 22 at 7pm called Protect Your Identity - What to Keep and What to Toss. You’ll find out how long to save financial and tax records, what documents can be recycled or needed to be shredded, and how to safely store your documents in this time of identify theft. This program is being presented by Claudia Mott, CFP, CDFA & Mary Sunderland, CFA, CFP, IRS Enrolled Agent.

The second event is Long Hill Library’s Shredding Day for the Community on Saturday, Nov 2 from 9am to Noon.

A shredding truck from Security Shredding will be in the library’s parking lot from 9am til Noon to shred your papers.

Shredding Day is a fund-raiser for the library. The Shredding fees are $5 per grocery bag, $10 per box, and $35 per 30 gallon garbage bag.

This is an opportunity for you to securely dispose of your confidential and personal documents. The Security Shredding truck uses the latest state of the art equipment and shreds documents while you watch. Security Shredding is licensed, fully bonded and insured. You drive in, unload your papers and drive out with peace of mind.

Keys To Unlocking Financial Aid at Long Hill Library

Keys To Unlocking Financial Aid at Long Hill Library

Tuesday, October 15 at 7pm

Most families are concerned with how to pay for college and are unfamiliar with how financial aid works.  The Long Hill Library in Gillette is sponsoring The Keys to Unlocking Financial Aid, a free program for high school students and their parents on October 15th at 7 PM.  By the end of this program, attendees will be able to answer these questions:

•How can I estimate how much need-based financial aid my family qualifies for?
•What colleges are most likely to provide me (or my child) with merit aid?
•How can I be a smart consumer when selecting colleges?

If you want to know how to reduce costs, increase funds, and get better college aid, join Rana Slosberg of Slosberg College Solutions LLC for this informative 90-minute program.  Rana works with high school students and their families on the college selection and application process.  She is a member of the Higher Education Consultants Association and the New Jersey Association for College Admission Counseling.

Explore the Morris County Libraries with Passport to Imagination

Explore the Morris County Libraries and you may win a prize while you're at it!

The Long Hill Township Library will participate again this September in the Morris County Library Consortium’s Passport to Imagination contest. The contest, which runs throughout the month, encourages Morris county residents to check out other libraries in the Morris county library network.

To participate, library card holders must first obtain a MAIN “passport” from their home library and then visit five additional MAIN libraries where the passport will be stamped. Library card holders who complete this series of library visits will be entered into a contest to win an Apple  iPad 3, Google Nexus 7, or Kindle Paperwhite. The contest will be held from September 1, 2013 through September 30, 2013.

"It's so exciting for our library to be able to offer so many materials to our patrons," said Circulation Supervisor Clarissa Wagner.  “It’s a great example of the kind of shared services New Jersey residents want to see happening.”

New for 2013 is a special children’s contest called Captain MAINia’s Adventures, an inter-library scavenger hunt open to all Passport to Imagination players under 10 years old. If they are able to find Captian MAINia’s hot air balloon in the Children’s Room of each of the six libraries they visit, they will be eligible for extra prizes. Prizes will be awarded at the county-wide Passport drawing at the Morris County Library in October.

M.A.I.N., Inc., the Morris Automated Information Network, is a consortium of 37 public libraries in northern New Jersey serving a population of over a half million residents. Through its participation in the MAIN network the Long Hill Township Library is able to offer residents more than two million items that can be checked out, including books, CD’s, videos, DVD’s and downloadable audio and e-books.

Defensive Driving Course at Long Hill Library

Defensive Driving Course at Long Hill Library

6 hour class held over two days:
Wed, Aug 7 & Fri, Aug 9
from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.

The Long Hill Township Library is hosting an AARP Defensive Driving Course on Wednesday, August 7 & Friday, August 9.  The course is 6 hours long and is being held  from 10:30 to 1:30. Participants must attend both days.

Why Take an AARP Driver Safety Course?

Because driving has changed since you first got your license, and doing so could save you money!

Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads you travel every day. Some drivers age 50+ have never looked back since they got their first driver's licenses, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills.

By taking a driver safety course you'll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment. You'll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time. You will have a greater appreciation of driving challenges and of how you can avoid potential collisions and injuries to yourself and others.

You may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course, so consult your agent for details. Although the course is geared to drivers age 50 and older, the course is open to people of all ages.

AARP membership is not required to take the course and there are no tests to pass. The classroom course costs only $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members.

The Library is located at 917 Valley Rd, Gillette, NJ. Space is limited. Please call 908-647-2088 or stop by the library to register.

See a Play This Summer at Long Hill Library

See a Play This Summer at Long Hill Library

The Long Hill Township Library is pleased to present Ovid’s “Metamorphoses”   performed by The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey’s Next Stage Ensemble on Saturday, August 3 at Noon.  The library is located at 917 Valley Road, Gillette, NJ.

In Ovid’s “Metamorphoses,” the myths of Ancient Greece come vividly to life with a collection of tales of gods and mortals, romance and revenge, hope and rebirth. From the origin of Echo to the ill-fated choices of Midas, audiences will revel in famous and lesser-known tales that have shaped a culture.

How did the world begin? Why does a voice echo back to you when you shout in a canyon? Why do you see your reflection in still water? Does someone control your destiny? These and other essential questions of humanity have been the inspiration of legends and myths for centuries.

In residence on the campus of Drew University in Madison, The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey is one of the 22 professional theatres in the state. One of the leading Shakespeare theatres in the nation—serving 100,000 adults and children annually—it is New Jersey's only professional theatre company dedicated to Shakespeare's canon and other classic masterworks. Through its productions and education programs, the company strives to illuminate the universal and lasting relevance of the classics.

Book Club: Heads in Beds on Monday, July 8 @ 7pm

Join us on Monday, July 8 @ 7:00 pm. We'll be discussing Heads in Beds by Jacob Tomsky!
Cover Art
Heads in Beds - Jacob Tomsky
ISBN: 9780385535632
We all feel that hotels owe us something more than we’re getting: here you’ll learn both how to get it (though most of us are likely to balk at the explicit calls to theft) and why you should probably be very polite to the people who are trying to provide it for you. They can be kind; they can also exact cruel, stomach-turning vengeance.

The prose is brisk and smart, and Tomsky also provides helpful appendixes at the back of the book to teach us more tricks of the trade, lies we will be told and some of the absolute no-nos for guests (if you must complain, never forget to eat a breath mint first).

It’s an ideal gift for the career traveler in your life: an entertaining and informative read for a long flight or a quiet night BEFORE you check-in to your hotel.

Happy 14th Anniversary Gates Avenue Knitters!

The Gates Avenue Knitters and Crocheters (aka GAK) celebrated the beginning of 14 years together on Wed, April 24th at the Long Hill Township Library.

The Gates Avenue Knitters are a generous group...having donated hundreds of hats, scarves, mittens, blankets and sweaters to numerous local charities.  In the fall, beautiful hand-knit hats are contributed to the Long Hill Library.  Many of you probably own GAK hats! This year the "hat" money collected has helped sponsor the “Museum Adventure Pass” program.

The Gates Avenue Knitters & Crocheters meet on the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of each month at 7-9pm. They welcome new members!
