Book Club - Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything

Please join us at the Long Hill Library on Monday, Sept 10 @ 7:00 pm! We'll be discussing Moonwalking With Einstein: The Art and Science of Remembering Everything by Joshua Foer.
"When I wake up," Joshua Foer writes in Moonwalking With Einstein, "the first thing I do is check my day planner, which remembers my schedule so that I don't have to. When I climb into my car, I enter my destination into a GPS device, whose spatial memory supplants my own."
Journalist Foer examines the role of memory in public and private life, while also telling the story of his efforts to compete in the U.S. Memory Championship, a tournament in which contestants memorize random words and numbers, or the order of a deck of cards. Foer set out to write about mental athletes — and ended up becoming one himself. At his prime, Foer could memorize the order of a shuffled deck of playing cards in 1 minute and 40 seconds
In the end Foer realizes that memory is a key component of who we are, but decides "it is forgetting, not remembering, that is the essence of what makes us human."

Books available at the library.

How Teens Learn - What Parents Need to Know!

How the Teenage Brain Learns @ Long Hill Library on Sunday, Sept 9 from 2pm - 3pm
Learn how you & your teen can work together to identify their "learning profile" and develop a strategy for studying.
Just like your body has many systems that work together to keep you alive, the brain has eight systems that need to work together in order for learning to occur. However, not all systems grow and develop at the same rate.
When a child struggles to learn, it may indicate that all systems are not growing at the same rate (very common in teenagers). Learn about these systems and examples of how you (and your teenager) can work together to identify their "learning profile" and develop a strategy for studying.

Carol Landa has taught freshman Biology at WHRHS for 10 years as well as CP Physics and MASS (Math Applications and Science Skills).
On weekends she teaches a musical program to preschoolers. Prior to teaching high school, Ms. Landa developed and taught curriculum dealing with Six Sigma problem-solving for numerous corporations. She holds degrees in Biology (BS) and Food Science (MS) and is currently pursuing a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study (CAGS) in Neurodevelopment.

  • Bring your library card AND passport to five more participating M.A.I.N. libraries or branches. Each library will add a stamp to your Passport.
  • Once you’ve received six stamps, leave your Passport at any participating M.A.I.N. library or branch for a chance to win.
The contest will begin on September 1, 2012. Passports will be distributed, stamped and collected until September 30, 2012.

More information, including a full list of rules, regulations and eligibility requirements, is available at www.mainlib.org/passport

Through books, innovative programs, digital media, film, music, storytelling and classes, your library works to bring knowledge and culture to your fingertips. Here’s your chance to see how libraries in your surrounding communities work together towards a common goal: to send your imagination on a trip around the world (and Morris County).

This adventure takes place during National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and is made possible by participating libraries in the Morris Automated Information Network, a consortium of 36 independent libraries and branches and the Morris County Library.

Have fun & good luck!

The Hunger Games times Three @ Long Hill Library

"The Hunger Games" will be shown at the Long Hill Library THREE times! You can catch it at:
  • Monday, August 20 @ 6pm
  • Wednesday, August 29 @ 2pm
  • Friday, August 31 @ 1pm
The 2012 film, based on the best selling book trilogy by Suzanne Collins, stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. It takes place in a not-too-distant future after North America has collapsed.

Weakened by drought, fire, famine and war, the continent has been replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment and part brutal intimidation, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. All citizens are required to watch the 24 participants eliminate their competitors.

Loved the book? Then come see how the movie compares!

Saw the movie? The book is even better!
